The Death of the Jaguar

The jaguar had every chance of winning when it jumped with its claws and fangs bared to kill. The Brazilian jungle frontier allowed no mistakes, and this time, the victim, a subsistence farmer lived, for he struck down the jaguar with his machete.

Neide, a barefoot slip of a girl, later came to see the jaguar skin. When she stroked the spotted hide, the softness and beauty of it brought to her a sense of pity so deep that it changed the entire direction of her life. Her sympathies for the jungle and all of its marvelous life exploded into a passion.

This is the gripping story of one woman's lonely battle to disrupt the destruction of Indian animal habitat in the State of Mato Grosso in Brazil; It was a battle that led her into direct confrontation with corrupt, politically powerful men.

The author and his wife have lived and worked in Brazil and still speak Portuguese. They have the jaguar hide that plays a key role in this woman's destiny.
